Media nowadays has a great effect on kids. It influences their way of seeing the world and interacting with it. Many movies, videogames and TV shows have been accused of influencing kids with extremely graphic visuals of violence, therefore suggesting the idea that murder, physical harassment and deadly attacks are an unavoidable issue on our society. However in order to relate them with this claims, there must be some kind of evidence review. In our thinking skills class we analyzed the case of two boys who had killed a fellow partner. Different sources argued about the role of the movie Childs Play 3. Around the world there are millions of different sources that provide us information from every kind. However some information may rely in more accurate concepts and fundaments. There´s where the concept of credibility appears. Each source, from people, to magazines, to newspapers, can be more or less credible. That´s why we use a credibility criteria in order to identify the concept. One of the ideas we take into account in the credibility criteria is the vested interest. Companies, governments, etc sometimes have a personal interest in the outcame of a decision or situation. That is why they may distort information in other to favour themselves. At school, we have a subject called thinking skills, where we study Critical thinking. The skills required to analyse and evaluate arguments are taught in this subject. The term argument consists of a reason or reasons which support a conclusion. To support a certain point of view or a particular belief, we need evidence, if not the argument is not reliable. Moreover, we ought to make a judgement about the credibility of the evidence in each argument. In order to do this judgement, we need to focus on the source, which is where the evidence comes from. The source might be an eyewitness, a TV Programme or an article in a magazine and etc. Furthermore, we must use a credibility criteria.
