IGCSE Practice: Analysis of language

In the Language Class, we did a couple of mocks as to be prepared for the IGCSE exams. We paracticed different ways and methods of writing as to be fully able to develop any kind of writing the examiners could ask us to write. Here I leave you an example of an analysis of words we wrote.

Re-read the descriptions of:
(a) Elsie Clinch in paragraph 3, beginning with 'Elsie Clinch stomped ...'
(b) the road in paragraph 8, beginning with 'Eventually , the plains gave away...'

Select words and phrases from these descriptions, and explain how the writer has created effects by using this language
Up to 10 marks are available for the content of your answer.

In many cases the author uses words such as "leather boots" and "imperiously" in order to create the image of a strong fighting woman that represents Elsie Clinch. He portrays her "wildly gesticulating" as to show her ability to argue and defend her ideals. She is shown as a decided character and someone who does not agree with all the alterations and changes the trip is suffering. What is more, by saying she has recognizable and noticeable gestures, the author defends an idea of this woman as someone who is able to impose herself and her ideals and, at the same time, create an effect of respect and fear on her peers. Furthermore, by including the word "defeated", the author transmits a situation of problems, discussions and disgusts.
As regards the description  of the scenery the use of visual images such as "rocky foothills" the author conveys the idea of a full natural place that has not been touched by human actions. However, at the same time, this represents a problem for travellers. It also connects with the effect of uncomfort as it creates an image of a dazzling, clanching road. Besides, when the author refers to the word "deteriorated" he portrays the idea that this distopic landscape has not been well taken care of and has developed many failures. This is also represented by the word "uneven" that shows an effect of risk and lack of preparation from the road wich is incapable beeing driven. All of this words have been chosen by the author to portray a desertic and forgotten rustic landscape, as to contrast even more with the ideals of passengers.
